Port Harcourt, June 21, 2013 (NAN) Mrs Josephine Okuonghae, Co-ordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Rivers, has said that the state government was working out modality to pay the cumulative state allowances of the corps members.
Okuonghae told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Friday that all corps members, especially those that had passed out of service, would ``definitely receive their allowances”.
``The money will be paid into their accounts even as many have gone to their various states; so, I am sure that no ex-corps member will be left out.
``I urge them to be calm because I believe that the state government is working assiduously to clear all the corps members’ allowances,” she assured.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the 2012/13 batch ‘A’ and ‘B’ ex-corps members, who served in the state, had yet to receive their state government allowances.
NAN recalls that the state government paid N5, 000 and N10, 000 to corps members serving in the city and rural areas respectively.
A 2013 batch ‘B’ ex-corps member, Mr Chiamaka Kelvin, appealed to the state government to pay the accumulated allowances.
``I have passed out and I have not been paid the state allowance; we have been told that the money would be paid into our various bank accounts.
``I believe the money will help in one way; I don’t want to go back to my state immediately; I am waiting to see the outcome of it.
``Well, I intend opening a small business outfit rather than sitting at home.
``I don’t like staying idle and as I have finished school, I don’t want to be going back to my parents for money,” Kelvin said.
The corps member, however, commended the state government for its contributions to NYSC scheme and urged other states, in the federation, to emulate the state.
Miss Juliet Adebayo, a serving corps member, suggested that the state allowances meant for corps members be paid before the completion of their one-year service. (NAN)
